Tuesday Night = Cheese Fondue Night at Chez Lola

Backyard Seating

It’s funny how some of the slightest things can create cravings. Like, a chocolate candy commercial on TV. Or, passing by someone eating a soft pretzel. Or maybe even a fellow Tumblr post on cheese fondue. Welp, the latter is what brought me to Chez Lola to relish in their hot, cheesy goodness.

Fondue Nights on Tuesdays

This quaint restaurant has something going on most days of the week: Mondays and Wednesdays promote live music, Tuesdays offer cheese/meat fondues, Thursdays offer all-you-can-eat mussels, and Sundays are for steak lovers. Anyway, I’ve been looking up places for a good cheese fondue and Lola’s impressed me with their mixture. It consists of gruyere, gouda, and comte cheese cooked with white wine, garlic, and Kirsch. Impressive or what? Creamy, rich, nuttiness in a medley of cheeses balanced with an ever so subtle bitterness. Things to dip are bread croutons, apples, baked potato, and grapes. Although the cheese eventually lumped up, it was worth $20. If anything just ask the staff for a few drops of wine to get the consistency going again.

Crowded Table

Christine and I split the fondue and ordered our own entrees. Oh, and drinks. She got a “Lolatini” which was essentially a lychee martini whipped up from gin and sake for $8. I got a “Pear ‘is’ Martini” (cute, right) whipped up from pear vodka and juice, with the glass rimmed of cinnamon and brown sugar, for $8. It wasn’t strong and tasted mediocre.

So, entrees. Christine ordered their homemade raviolis for $14. She told me it was filled with savory veal and topped with crumbled cheese (I forgot which). I ordered their seafood pasta for $15, which was spaghetti marinara with calamari, tiger shrimp, and mussels. Fresh and filling! If you’re a meat enthusiast then the rest of Chez Lola’s menu may be appealing with their roasted chicken, bockwurst, lamb tagine, and short ribs.

I think the pricing was higher than necessary for the majority of their selections, but I felt our visit was worth it due to their decent food, atmosphere, and attentive service. …And, perhaps ultimately, their mouthwatering cheese fondue.
