An amateur’s food journal thatmostly covers NYC.
I’m no expert in the culinary arts, but like anyone else, I have a thing for food.

This page is a tribute to any restaurant eats worth mentioning. Some are tagged as “home eats” that were whipped up at a home kitchen.Flickr Photostream

http://hungryk9.tumblr.com/

$16 Maine-style lobster roll at Red Hook Lobster Pound.Fresh...

$16 Maine-style lobster roll at Red Hook Lobster Pound.
Fresh lobster from Maine? Then she graciously offered more when I expressed enthusiasm. I restrained myself and only took seconds, though. ;-)
I bought their white chocolate pastry that had layers of crisp wafer crumbs, fluffy cake, light creams, and cocoa powder.

A returning visit is anticipated in the future. Likely for their $1.50 french macarons, too!

$12 fried green tomato sandwich at Queens Comfort. There was jam and slaw underneath the bun as well. Sandwiches come with hand-cut fries or salad. The restaurant is BYOB-friendly, so I brought a bottle of red to share with my frand (…friend).
It’s worth noting that the place and staff are unpretentious and straight-forward; and our waiter was additionally considerate. Amazing!...

$24 Groupon of afternoon tea for two at Sanctuary T! Amazing! Highly recommended for the quality teas, food, and hospitality (well, for the most part*).

It’s a regular price of $24 per person. Afternoon tea takes place 3-5pm on Mon-Thurs with unlimited teas and treats. *However, when my aunt and I asked for a second serving of the tiers, we were declined and told that they only had a certain amount of treats made per day, per afternoon tea reservation. It was either a sneaky tactic to claim they’re unlimited, or they’re unorganized in lacking to specify that you have to confirm for more than one serving.

Putting that unsatisfactory note aside, Goyee and I really enjoyed everything that was prepared. Our teas were served in a nicely sized cup with a generously filled tea strainer. Their tea menu, btw, is a pleasant array of black, herbal, green, white, and more; a few of them being organic and/or fair trade.
We started our nibbling with the sandwiches, which were two types: salmon and egg salad. The salmon was citrus-cured and put together with creme fraiche. The egg salad had an amazing accent of truffle oil. These were accompanied by a crostini that had garbanzo puree and crisp kale. Very delicious.
The scones, which weren’t as dry as traditional scones, came with the standard clotted cream and jam. The tier also came with lemon teacakes and warm Nutella-filled doughnuts.
Lastly, the bites were finished with petit fours: melt-in-your-mouth rosemary caramels (!) and dark chocolate bonbons with osmathus ganache. Unique and impressive.

The crostini, teacakes, doughnuts, and petit fours aren’t traditional selections in an afternoon tea, but it’s certainly a praiseworthy, contemporary interpretation. It’s interesting that they nixed turkey and cucumber sandwiches. Don’t get me wrong, though — I’m in love with their salmon+creme fraiche and truffle egg salad sandwiches. I’d definitely consider coming back again.

$.75/falafel at Gyros & Goodies in Washington Township, NJ....

$.75/falafel at Gyros & Goodies in Washington Township, NJ. Pretty good. The hot fries came with ranch and were dusted with parmesan. The veggie burger had a decent smoky-tasting patty that was covered with melty, smoked mozz. On top were pea shoots, a fat chunk of avo (which I eventually sliced up), and tomato. The bottom bun had a light spread of mayo. The white wine was a smooth pairing. Overall everything is a good value here.

Sandwich at the abode. I ordered a Bloody Mary as the drink and the huevos loisada as the entree. It’s hollandaise on nicely poached eggs, atop what they call a shrimp pie, on a watercress salad.
Is the amount of shrimp suppose to be frugal? Are shrimplets* suppose to be used in the pie for Brazilian cuisine? (*look lower right in the plate)

A fact is that their included cocktail isn’t strong. Disappointing? Yes. Surprising? Maybe not so. Jason said his guava mimosa wasn’t strong either, and it was very pulpy. Another thing was that his burger was given to him cold. (It didn’t bother him enough to send it back, he was hungry.) Aside from all of this, they can definitely salt their potatoes perfectly, be it the potato pie or the french fries.

I don’t recommend coming here for brunch unless you want to settle.

$15 small-sized cheesecake by S&S Cheesecake (their place...

$15 small-sized cheesecake by S&S Cheesecake (their place isn’t open on Sundays, this was boughten from a retailer a few doors down). But maybe Eileen’s is just my personal preference. Derek offered the benefit of the doubt that S&S wasn’t open at the time, so we couldn’t try a freshly made cheesecake.
We’ll give it another try eventually. Just a note: the location is in the Bronx. That one had ground beef, andouille, and tasso on top of cheddar & mozz. Looks like those toppings weren’t quite as generous on that. You can say it’s one brilliant way to earn nice tips.) From the two trips made in one weekend, and from my experience last year, I’d say their attitudes are consistent. ✌

~$10/plate at Sam Woo’s BBQ.
